| Lower Manhattan is teeming with wildlife.
Even with the dramatic increase in human population, a wide variety of
birds and mammals enliven our turf. Some have been here forever. Some
are introduced species.
Only one lower Manhattan species merits the perjorative "invasive" human beings can be pretty hard on the territory they take over. We dig things up. We build tall, barrier-like buildings. We dump stuff that turns out to be poisonous to life in general, to wildlife and even to ourselves and have been doing it intensively in Lower Manhattan for nearly four centuries. Our construction digs it up again and puts it back in the air we breathe; we add to it most every afternoon (think about the Hudson Street approach to the Holland Tunnel). We're not going away. We can, however, be better inhabitants, and we can share our habitat in more kindly ways with other species, several of which are here only because we brought them. Wildlife in Tribeca is a federally tax exempt [IRC sections 501(c)3 & 508(c)1(b)] association of people incorporated under the New York State Education Law, mostly living in Lower Manhattan , in the Triangle Below Canal bounded by Canal Street to the north, the East River and the Hudson River. The founding core have lived in the old Washington Market district for decades. We are people generally committed to the Downtown Life that has drawn so many people to our neighborhoods sometimes disrupting just what it is that has made our area so very interesting, but then, change is inevitable, even if not inevitably good. Wildlife in Tribeca (WiT) is particularly concerned with the critters with whom we share our neighborhoods. We want to know more about them, and to share that expanding awareness with our neighbors. We want to rescue those who need help, ideally returning them to our shared neighborhood. We are, in short, your neighbors. We welcome those who share our interests to join with us. |
